The Mapleton Flood of 2012

I did not get flooded at all because we were up a hill a little bit. I don’t know how many inches but my trampoline was under water. It was not floating, but the water was very high. I did have a slide down by my friend’s house and Shayndel’s bridge.

                Okay, so we all know it flooded and this is what I saw . . .

                At my house it didn’t flood that much but the water still went up. My step-dad, my Uncle Dewy, My Uncle John and my stepdad’s friend, David were all out on a red boat and boated to the Mapleton Store and are on the news. Everyone else was just sitting around and that’s about it.

During the flood of 2012 I got worried for my dad because he works at the mill and sometimes he goes up in the mountains and looks for firewood. At my granny’s a big branch broke a little and some branches broke. At Peggy and Allen’s big trees fell and me and Kaley helped them throw them on the fire. I live on a hill so I did not get flooded but down my hill were some rivers that had high water.

They evacuated Backstreet.  Backstreet got flooded. The culvert got torn out by the mill. The railroad tracks were flooded by the creek. The river went over the road.

The wind and flood is bad.  The bank was flooded really bad. The power was out. The lawn mower was flooded and the four-wheeler was tool. Tools were everywhere. We had to move the lawn mower. We got to get our boots on so we can get the logs.

My house did not flood but some of the power went out in a couple of houses. The river got up half-way past the road. A couple trees fell over and one of my neighbor’s driveway flooded. We had to wait to go anywhere for two days and we finally went into town.

The flood really did affect me because it was two feet away.  The water was flooding our back yard. It flooded our Grandpa’s friend Wes’ house. That was sad!!!! I’m sorry that it happened for my Grandpa’s friend.

The Flood

           It all started when I woke up to get ready for school. I was in the kitchen when Peter said to my  mom,

“Babe, Stacy and Medina are here.”

Stacy came in and said, “School is canceled. They’re evacuating Mapleton. You guys can come to our house. You’ll be safer there.”

We all walked down to our creek that was behind Jesse and Kaitlynn’s old house. It was still a creek. We decided that we would stay home. But then right after they left we decided we would go, or else we would be stuck at our house without any food. So we packed up our stuff and left.

I took a lot of pictures of the flood. I have a picture of the lower parking lot at Randy’s. I took like one ever three hours. My house did not get flooded at all. I had fun hanging out with my family and taking pictures.

My dad’s friend, his house flooded. It was so, so, so sad for him. The bank got flooded. The place where my dad worked really hard at, it got flooded. It was sad for him. My friend’s house got flooded really, really bad. I live on Rice Road by the cemetery, so we were high so we did not get flooded.

My trampoline floated away. They sent out a rescue boat. They brought back five people and three dogs. They launched the boat out of my bamboo. It was really cool. They got two lamas and a horse. A car got swept away. It knocked down a tree, it was really big.

All About the Flood

My Grandma’s house up to two steps. It did not hurt my house though because I live on a hill. My Grandma’s house was really muddy. She had to clean her house. She went to Newport. I miss her a lot. I won’t be able to see her for three days. My house lights were flickering off and on in my house. I really miss my Grandma. I miss Green Eyes and James and Papa and Joan.

The flood was pretty bad. I couldn’t go outside because deep water came up on the road. The bridge flooded all the way. Also my sisters PeeWee and my mom and dad.

My neighbor’s yard was flooded and their fence was broken down. My garden was flooded badly. A hole bunch of stuff of ours floated away. We evacuated to my aunt’s and Grandma’s house and watched the news. The bank was flooded and Backstreet was flooded. Our camper was flooded. Our whole yard was flooded. The blue apartments were flooded behind Randy’s. Randy’s was not flooded. It was a foot until it was on the bridge. Lots of people evacuated to the Event Center. It was a bad flood.

                My friend Robbie’s house got flooded. His Lego Nijogo’s floated away. My friend Jesse’s house did not get flooded. My Aunt Cindy’s house did not get flooded, but she is not the aunt that lives with my Grandma. My Aunt and Grandma’s house did not get flooded. There was no school for four days off.    

                It was hard rain and snow. I stayed at my Grandma’s playing Mario Brothers. I’m surprised that Randy did not get flooded. Well a lot of people were in the water in Cushman. It was not funny. I didn’t think it was funny.

                This guy drove into the creek with a little boy or girl. I do not know. I was really sad for the people.

The Flood of 2012 of Mapleton

My house was not flooded. But it did cover the back street and my garden. It was close getting to my house. It was like four inches until it was in my house. I was not scared. Our family went to Tristan’s Grandma’s, so we didn’t get flooded. We were there for three days.

When the flood hit I saw the water at my house and I saw my fields and I went swimming in a large field.

It all started on Wednesday night. The water started rising and did not stop until it reached twenty nine feet. I was at my aunts and my house was a foot from getting flooded. I have a club and it was underwater. There was a big ditch with a tree. I could not reach and I am five foot two and it is six foot three and the water was at it. I think that’s what saved us because it filled up first.

My experiences of the flood were that it was cool but scary. We stayed home because it didn’t get high enough to touch our house. We looked outside and our neighbor’s house had about two feet of water in his house. The thing that was funny was that my dog Duke went swimming in our back yard. The water was 12 feet in our back yard. Our push lawn mower was almost gone so we moved it and our bikes were under water so my dad went out to move the bikes.

During the flood I got woken up at 4:00 am with my mom telling to move onto the couch because my Grandma was coming over because her house was flooded. So I just stayed up and two hours later she finally showed up and I got stuck in a room with a really loud dog. Then two Chihuahuas showed up and they’re really annoying. Then we went to the store to get candy. We also visited the bank which was flooded half way up the doors. Then we went back home and I played my Play-station 3, fell asleep a couple hours later.  Like three days later they left.

When the flood happened my family played games. We played Twister, Rock-Paper-Scissors, Tic-Tac-Toe, Go Fish, and Hang Man.

During the flood of 2012 in my basement there was some water. It was in our garage. At the track there was a mud slide and the barn was flooded inside too.

During the flood of 2012 we helped evacuate someone’s house. They had a flood. Some water went over Backstreet Road. We watched the flood then we went back home.

We stayed at our house. My house and yard didn’t get flooded. I didn’t lose anything in the flood. I didn’t get scared. I had fun going to my Grandpa’s when it flooded. My field got flooded. I went out to see the flood.

I stayed the night at a friend’s house because of the flood. Our yard flooded and it almost flooded into the house. I lost one toy, a Spiderman action figure. I got scared cause we almost got dragged into the river. It damaged our car and we tried to go to Florence but the road was closed.

Lilli Guse – Sixth Grade
My house didn’t flood buy my cow fields did. It got up to 7 inches. So I got on my rubber rain boots and went outside. I made sure my cows were okay. Then I walked to my second field and trudged through six inches of water. After about 10 minutes I started walking back and tripped on brier berries and fell in more brier berries. After that I walked home and changed and wet to bed. The next day I went to Eugene to visit my Grandma. We had fun.

I stayed at home for the flood because my house is at a high elevation. I stayed at my house until Friday. On Friday I went to Eugene. My house and back yard got zero inches. Since my house didn’t flood I didn’t lose anything. No flooding so nothing scared me. The only fun was no school. I did not check flood damage or visit the emergency shelter in Florence.

When it flooded I sat in my room and slept I didn’t witness the flood because there are curtains on my windows. I also didn’t leave my room because my food was brought to me.

I went to Brandy Long’s during the flood. We made forts and played horses. Yes our house flooded a whole foot! We lost our yellow lawn mower. It was fun that I didn’t have to go outside and my dog swam in our yard. I just looked at the damage from my window.

Was there anything fun about the flood? I got rubber boots on and stomped in the puddles.
Did you go out and look at the flood and the damage? Yes there were fallen trees at and Camp Lane and the river got really high.

Spencer Allen – Kindergarten
I went to Uncle Mike’s house in Salem. I played Mario and watched Uncle Mike and DJ play basketball. My deck flooded. We lost our boat and pants that were on the deck. I didn’t get scared. Nothing scared me. My Grandma’s cars got in the water. I didn’t have fun at all.

Brian Burnett – Kindergarten
I went to the store and we got some gummy candy. I went back home and played some basketball and played with some building blocks. My yard and house flooded. I go scared because when I was sleeping, the flood came in the dark. I played and swam in the water.

I stayed home and played with Sissy. My basement flooded. I was scared, but I had fun with Daddy because he used the chainsaw and dad took me on the truck to see the flood.

Was there anything that happened that scared you? The storm scared me.
Was there anything fun about the flood? It looked like the ocean.
Did you go out and look at the flood and the damage? I saw damage on the phone.

I went to Grandma Donna’s. I had a sleep over. The water came on the road but not in my house or yard. I lost the flood, I really wanted it to stay. I did not get scared at all. It was fun seeing the flood at Grandma Donna’s. I saw the flood down at my basement.

I just stayed home. I watched movies. The bottom of my house and my yard flooded. I lost my sparkle horse. It’s gone now because the water took it away when I was in the house. There was water in the house and it scared me. I got to swim and splash in the water! I looked out of my window to see everything.
